If you downloaded the new iOS5.1 and suddenly saw a “4G” icon where you used to see a “3G” icon, please know that you are NOT getting a 4G connection now.
I first thought it was a glitch with AT&T iPhones (as it appears only on their’s), but it appears that Apple and AT&T are actually stretching the definition of 4G to the furthest extreme.
AT&T has released a statement saying,
The iPhone 4S operates on AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network and as such, it is only appropriate that people see ’4G’ on the phone when they are connected to HSPA+
The problem is that HSPA+ is not true 4G, in fact AT&T has a true 4G network in its LTE its using for the new iPad. I find it very disappointing that AT&T and Apple would attempt to fake people out with this silliness. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me about their iPhones, “now running on 4G!”.
